Meclizine (Meclizine)
General information
Meclizine is an antihistamine and anticholinergic. It works by blocking a chemical messenger in the brain, which helps to reduce or prevent vomiting. Meclizine is used to treat or prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. It is also used for vertigo (or dizziness) caused by certain inner ear problems.
Directions
Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Take Meclizine with a full glass of water. To prevent motion sickness, take the dose of 25 to 50 mg about 1 hour before you travel or engage in activity that causes motion sickness. To treat vertigo, you may need to take Meclizine several times daily. The recommended dose is 25 to 100 mg daily, in divided dosage.
Precautions
While taking this drug patients should be cautioned against driving a car or operating dangerous machinery. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Patients should avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this drug.
Contraindications
You should not take this medication if you are allergic to Meclizine, or if you have asthma, glaucoma, problems with urination, enlargement of the prostate gland. It is not recommended in children under 12 years of age.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue. Less serious side effects may include: blurred vision, urinary retention, low blood pressure, dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness.
Drug interactions
Alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers can increase drowsiness caused by Meclizine. Tell your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products. Don't start a new medicine without consulting your doctor.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. Sometimes Meclizine is taken only when needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. Overdose symptoms may include extreme drowsiness.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 15-30 C (59-86 F) away from light, heat and moisture.
